Reading 3| BIM and Student Education

Report on Integrated Practice 5| Renee Cheng

As BIM is further integrated into the field of architecture, the education of students has begun to change. The reading poses a relevant question, “what role should BIM have in architectural education and where is its appropriate place in the curriculum?” The end result of higher education is not only knowledge but skills that meet the needs of a students’ profession. While architecture has steadily moved into a technology savvy profession it is critical for students to understand the basis of design. 3D modeling, while beneficial, can become dangerous to those unprepared and without the basic skills of design. While drafting may seem limiting, it is my opinion that 3D modeling can become more limiting and demanding when one is offered unlimited capabilities.
